Arctic Importance: Shipping and Missile Paths

Renewed political attention on Greenland from the White House has not emerged in a vacuum. The Arctic is becoming increasingly geopolitically relevant as climate change reduces sea-ice extent and extends seasonal navigability across the Arctic Ocean (that is despite the fact that President Trump has indicated he believes climate change is a hoax). This shift has the potential to shorten maritime routes between Asia and Europe, particularly along the Northern Sea Route and, eventually, transpolar corridors. While year-round commercial viability remains decades away, the strategic implications are already significant.

Greater navigability would not only affect trade but also alter naval access. Arctic sea lanes could provide Russia and, also in more limited terms, China with more direct approaches to the North Atlantic, challenging long-standing maritime containment patterns.

Greenland's importance predates these developments. During the Cold War, it hosted a dense network of U.S. installations because of its position along the shortest flight paths between Soviet missile fields and North America. Early warning, interception, and radar coverage across the polar approaches were central to nuclear deterrence architectures.

Today, Greenland retains value as part of the Arctic surveillance and defence network rather than as a site of imminent commercial transformation. Despite heightened political rhetoric, the operational reality is more measured: the Arctic is becoming more accessible and more strategically contested, but it is not yet a fully open maritime theatre.
